About Sussex County Bankruptcy Records
Sussex County is the southernmost of Delaware's three counties. Georgetown is the county seat. The county covers towns like Milford, Seaford, Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, and Dewey Beach. Growth in beach towns has driven up both consumer and small business filings over the last decade. All of those cases are filed in Wilmington.
There is no bankruptcy courthouse in Sussex County. The federal court has just one spot in the state, and that's at 824 N. Market Street, 3rd Floor, Wilmington. The drive from Georgetown takes about 90 minutes on a good day. Many folks use PACER to pull case data instead of making the trip. Learn more on the Sussex County government site.
The site links to the Recorder of Deeds, County Council, and other county offices. Use it to find state court contact info too.
Where to Find Sussex County Bankruptcy Records
PACER is the main online tool for bankruptcy records. Go to pacer.uscourts.gov to make a free account. Then you can search by party name, case number, or SSN. The fee is $0.10 per page with a $3.00 cap per doc. You can save dockets as PDFs.

For in-person search or copies, make the trip to Wilmington. Public access terminals are at the courthouse. The clerk can print copies on the spot. Certified copies cost a bit more. If you need a case filed before December 30, 2002, the file may be at the National Archives in Philadelphia instead.
Sussex County Courthouse Records
The Sussex County Courthouse is at 1 The Circle in Georgetown. The building houses the Court of Common Pleas and the Superior Court. While these state courts do not handle bankruptcy cases, they hold records that can come up in a case.
The Superior Court keeps records of civil judgments, state tax liens, pending suits, and criminal cases. These belong on your bankruptcy schedules when you file. If you miss a creditor or a judgment, your discharge may not wipe out the debt.
This page is from the Delaware Courts site. Use it for the courthouse phone, address, and hours.
For online state court search, use CourtConnect at courts.delaware.gov. CourtConnect shows dockets for Superior Court, Court of Common Pleas, and Justice of the Peace Court. It does not show federal bankruptcy cases.

Sussex County's Recorder of Deeds, also in Georgetown, keeps deeds, mortgages, UCC filings, and federal tax liens. These records come up in many cases. A trustee will check your deed to see who owns what. A lien on the deed means a creditor has a claim on your home. You need to list every secured creditor on Schedule D.
Common Chapters for Sussex County Bankruptcy Records
Chapter 7 is the most common chapter for Sussex County filers. A trustee sells non-exempt assets and pays back creditors. Most Chapter 7 cases close in a few months. The fresh start lets you move on from old debt.
Chapter 13 is a repayment plan that runs three to five years. It lets wage earners keep their home or car and catch up on missed payments. Chapter 11 is less common for people but is used by firms. Sussex County has fewer corporate filings than New Castle County, but beach town businesses do file Chapter 11 now and then. Title 11 of the U.S. Code sets the rules for each chapter.
